I’m still learning, listening, and observing, but I’ve noticed there are ways to be on the same page with you: If I wait to discuss issues when we’re not both upset, tired, or in a rush, I’ve noticed that taking a three-second pause before I respond can prevent a page of our story being ripped up, torn out, and tossed away. I know at times we’ve had missing pages times when I’ve overreacted, been too quick to judge, closed my mind, slammed the door, and walked away. I know I will have my bad days, and that that’s ok. But by moving the focus to ‘choose’ it reminds me that every time I am facing difficulties, I can make a choice to move past those difficulties into a more positive place. There are some things you just can’t put a price on. I am learning that oftentimes, our children simply want to be heard in hard moments such as these. I am learning that oftentimes, I unintentionally exacerbate the problem by bringing my own baggage into the conversation. As my child and I laid there in silence, my hand in hers, I distinctly remember watching other kids win the awards and accolades I thought I had a chance to earn. Thank you so much for this. I work part-time, so I often feel I don’t contribute enough financially. I am part-time at home mom and feel I don’t give enough for my kids. The house is not always clean, dinner is not always made so sometimes I feel I’ve let my husband down in not pulling my weight. Thank you so much for this forum to talk about them. I remember when my Mom was struggling as a recently divorced mom of 4 kids, ages 6-20. She also was struggling to care for an elderly aunt and alcoholic sisters. She had me and my teenage brother to care for at home, a full-time teaching job, and graduate courses. Things slowly got better. One thing I have repeatedly highlighted above is the various challenges I’ve encountered to get to this point, and yet because of my grit and determination to make this happen, then I’m much closer to my goal now than ever. So I can use your pearls of wisdom with my grandchildren.
